Canadian Osteopathic Aid Society
Purpose The purpose of the Canadian Osteopathic Aid Society (COAS) is to help establish and promote the growth of osteopathic healthcare in Canada. The COAS, in concert with the Canadian Osteopathic Association (COA), helps liaise with government and regulatory bodies, facilitating access to licensure for graduates of colleges of osteopathic medicine accredited by the Canadian and American Osteopathic Associations, and assisting students to overcome any hurdles they may face when engaging in training in the USA and upon return to Canada to practice.
Members The COAS is a lay organization made up of members of the public who wish to support and participate in the growth and development of osteopathic medicine in Canada.
Progress The osteopathic profession has made great strides in Canada over the past couple of decades. These many accomplishments include: 1) Recognition of the US osteopathic medical degree by all provincial Colleges of Physicians and Surgeons for full medical licensure 2) Recognition of the DO degree by the Medical Council of Canada for US osteopathic medical graduates who wish to write the Medical Council of Canada licensure examinations 3) Recognition by the College of Family Physicians of Canada for specialty certification in Family Medicine 4) Recognition by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada for Specialty certification 5) Acceptance of US osteopathic graduates into the Canadian Residency Matching Service for post-graduate residency training in several provinces
Further Endeavors There are a significant number of Canadians currently studying in the USA and it is estimated that approximately 50 Canadian students are accepted into US osteopathic medical schools each year. The COAS and the COA are now turning their focus on working towards having all provinces allow US osteopathic graduates access to their post-graduate training programs so that these individuals can complete their training in Canada and augment a healthcare system that is currently short of physicians. As well, the COAS and COA are working with regulatory authorities in Canada to review US osteopathic postgraduate training programs so that those osteopathic graduates who have completed DO instead of MD residency programs will also be eligible for specialty certification and practice in Canada.
Your support is needed We have come along way, but there is still much to do and we need your support. Please consider assisting the COAS by becoming a member or making a donation. Membership is $10.00 annually. Please complete the attached membership form and mail to: Canadian
